Neighborhood Legal Services | Legal Services for Low Income Residents of Essex County

We help clients who are having problems getting necessary assistance from the Department of Transitional Assistance (the welfare office), from the Social Security Administration and from other agencies that provide assistance to the poor.  We help people who are denied benefits when they apply, whose benefits are stopped and those who believe they are receiving less assistance than they should be.  We can also sometimes help with problems about overpayments of benefits  (when the agency tells you that you received more than you were supposed to and demands the money back).  The programs that we help with include TAFDC, AFDC, EAEDC, Medicaid, Food Stamps, Social Security, SSI, programs for veterans and Emergency Assistance.  We are also sometimes able to help with Unemployment cases involving benefits from the Department of Employment and Training.

All low income residents of Essex County are eligible for services from NLS.  To be financially eligible, you must have income below 125% of the federal poverty level for your household.  You must also have a problem that is within the kinds of problems we handle.  There are no income eligibility requirements for elders
